Violet Flowers For Shade
Violets – Violas grow best in cool, moist, shady environments. In the Northern United States they can tolerate full sun, but they prefer partial to full shade. Shade from deciduous trees is ideal because they can grow below the tree and receive full sun in the Spring, followed by protection from the harsh Summer sun once the trees get their leaves. These 4 different colored shade flowers, in my opinion, would look awesome planted together! The Violet’s symbolism is “Modesty, Simplicity, Affection, and Virtue”. A Blue Violet is symbolized as “Watchfulness, Faithfulness, and I’ll always be true”.
The Violet ‘Purple Showers’ blooms profusely in Spring and then continues with sporadic flowering until Fall by cutting them back. Large 2 inch blooms. Mature Height is 6 to 8 inches. Mature Spread is 6 to 8 inches. Plant these beauties in Full Shade to Partial Shady areas. For Zones 5-8.
Violet ‘Rebecca’ flowers from May through October if the plants are cut back after their first bloom cycle. I think this one is gorgeous. White blooms with a yellow flush in the center, and THEN flecked with edges of deep purple. Mature Height is 8 to 10 inches. Mature Spread is 8 to 10 inches. Plant in Full Shade to Partial Shade. For Zones 5-8.
Violet ‘Black Magic’ has one of the darkest flowers in existence! Solid matte black blooms that are 1 inch wide with a tiny bright yellow eye will have your flower gardening buddies swooning with envy. Blooms appear in Mid-Spring and will continue with sporadic flowering until Fall by cutting them back. Mature Height is 6 to 8 inches. Mature Spread is 6 to 8 inches. Plant in Full Shade to Partial Shade. For Zones 5-8.
The Violet ‘Etain’ would have to be my favorite, because I’m a ‘purple lover’. It has 1.75 inch lemon yellow flowers with contrasting lavender margins. Very fragrant, and blooms from May to October by cutting them back after their first bloom cycle. Mature Height is 6 to 8 inches. Mature Spread is 6 to 8 inches. Plant in Full Shade to Partial Shade.
